Toile de Jouy: Timeless classics

Toile de Jouy is a popular choice for tablecloths, runners, and placemats. Its detailed design adds a touch of sophistication and tradition to any table, making it an ideal choice for formal dinners and special events.

With their intricate designs often depicting idyllic scenes of rural life, tables dressed in Toile de Jouy evoke a sense of tradition, serenity, and romance. These fabrics transport diners to a bygone era, a classic of natural beauty, frequently used to dress events such as weddings or other family celebrations.

History of Toile de Jouy fabric

Toile de Jouy fabric, also known simply as “Toile,” has its roots in the Jouy-en-Josas region near Versailles, France. Its production dates back to the 18th century when Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, a German immigrant, founded a factory in Jouy-en-Josas in 1760. Oberkampf perfected the technique of printing fabric using copper plates, allowing for the creation of the detailed and delicate designs that characterize Toile de Jouy.

The word "Toile" means "fabric" in French, and "Jouy" refers to the town where it originated. These textiles were initially printed in a single color, usually blue, red, or black, on a white or cream background. Toile de Jouy motifs are often pastoral, bucolic, and romantic scenes, reflecting the idealized country life of the 18th century.

At Cases & More, Toile de Jouy occupies a very special place. We consider it a perfectly versatile design that works equally well for winter tables, due to its cozy and traditional look, as well as for cooler summer events, thanks to its rustic and bucolic design. At Cases & More, we offer Toile de Jouy in a wide variety of colors and formats, such as tablecloths, placemats, table runners, and underplate covers, which can be combined with each other or with other prints of the same color.

One of our most unexpected, yet most applauded, combinations is the Toile de Jouy tablecloth paired with the matching Vichy napkin. This combination offers an unexpected yet elegant and timeless look. Placemats: At Cases & More, we offer our Toile de Jouy placemats in a variety of colors, perfect for layering over a plain linen or gingham tablecloth, or simply layer them on a rustic table for a more casual look. We make them in a standard size (50 cm x 35 cm), the ideal size to accommodate the complete dining table setting (plates, glasses, cutlery, bread plate, and napkins). However, we can also custom-make them to suit your needs.

Placemats: One of our favorite ways to add a special touch to our tables is to use placemats that contrast with our tablecloths, or with the color of our tables or placemats. Our Toile de Jouy placemats are the perfect complement to a plain linen tablecloth that enhances the color of the toile.
